AN EARL AND HIS COUNTESS WHO DEFIED WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

AN EARL AND HIS COUNTESS WHO DEFIED WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

It was some years before the stern and ruthless William the Conqueror subdued all England. In Northumberland, as in York and Durham, the Saxon nobles defied his orders to submit to his rule until his march north compelled their fealty. Staged in the Abbey grounds at Alnwick, this episode, part of a stirring pageant of old days, recalls the heroic Earl Oswulf, of Bamburgh, the last of the Saxon earls who refused to bow the knee to the Conqueror. With him, on horseback, is his equally brave countess.
