BLUFF KING HAL AND HIS SIXTH QUEEN REVISIT THE OLD PALACE, HATFIELD

BLUFF KING HAL AND HIS SIXTH QUEEN REVISIT THE OLD PALACE, HATFIELD

In 1927 a pageant entitled King Harry's Progress, part of the Tudor revels in aid of the Hatfield Church Schools, was given in the Park of Hatfield House. Here we see King Henry VIII and his Queen, Catherine Parr, entering the grounds. Of the Old Hatfield Palace only one side remains. It was built in 1496 by the Bishop of Ely, and later was a royal residence. Such a scene as this must have often taken place when Henry VIII decided to visit his Hertfordshire residence. It will be noticed how true to the accepted portraits of that monarch is the costume and appearance of the person representing him. Elizabeth, Henry's daughter, was living at the Old Hatfield Palace, virtually a prisoner, when news was brought to her that she was Queen of England.
