MARTYRDOM OF THOMAS A BECKET: QUEEN PHILIPPA AT NORWICH

MARTYRDOM OF THOMAS A BECKET: QUEEN PHILIPPA AT NORWICH

The murder of Thomas a Becket in 1170 by Henry II's knights formed an episode in the pageant at Sandwich (bottom), held in 1926. At the Norwich pageant (top), of the same year, Queen Philippa, of Hainault, wife of Edward III, is seen with two ladies-m-waiting welcoming Flemish weavers who settled there in the fourteenth century and made the city a noted centre of the woollen manufacture. The Norwich pageant was one of the most successful ever-held.
