HARD BY THE HASTINGS ROAD: THE LAST TOWER OF SCOTNEY

HARD BY THE HASTINGS ROAD: THE LAST TOWER OF SCOTNEY

Coming through Lamberhurst and into Sussex as we pursue the course of the road to Hastings we see some lodge gates on our left. These give access to the grounds in which stands what is left of the castle of the de Scotneys. Like Bedlam, it was built in a pool, formed by damming the waters of a little stream, the Bewt. A small piece of the barbican and the beautiful thirteenth century tower, very French in style with its conical roof, is all that remains. Notice the machicolation round the parapet.
