SPLENDID RUINS OF BAYHAM ABBEY: THE BLUE BOYS INN

SPLENDID RUINS OF BAYHAM ABBEY: THE BLUE BOYS INN

Lamberhurst is an excellent halt on our way, for not only is it near Scotney Castle, but also the lovely ruins of Bayham Abbey (bottom). Here we see the remains of the gate-house with its bridge. It stands in the Marquess of Camden's park, and the foundation - for Premon-stratensian Canons—was moved hither from Otham, near Hailsham, about 1203. The monks left it at the dissolution of the lesser monasteries in 1536. This, save Netley, is the best monastic ruin south of Thames. The Blue Boys Inn (top) is just above Lamberhurit.
