Grace Darling's boat: Longstone and Flamborough Lights

At Cullercoats, a fishing village 1½ miles north of Tynemouth, is the marine laboratory (bottom) where is preserved the boat in which Grace Darling, daughter of the light-keeper on Longstone Island, set forth to rescue the erew of the steamer Forfarshire. Longstone (top left) is one of the remotest of the Fame islands. Generations of Darlings have been lighthouse keepers there, and only at the beginning of this century did the last one retire. The light on Flamborough Head (top right) is one of the most conspicuous in Yorkshire and all England.
