RARE VOLUMES IN THE ANCIENT LIBRARY OF HEREFORD CATHEDRAL

Over the incomplete west cloister of Hereford Cathedral is the library, which contains, among some 1,500 volumes, over 300 chained books and valuable manuscripts. The chains are attached to bars at the bottom of the end of the shelf. Two precious books are Caxton's "Golden Legend" and the "Hereford Use," the latter dating from 1270. In medieval times, when libraries were small, the books were usually-chained, so as not to be easily removed or misplaced. The custom continued until the early part of the eighteenth century.
