PRINTED TREASURES OF WOOTTON WAWEN AND WIMBORNE MINSTER

PRINTED TREASURES OF WOOTTON WAWEN AND WIMBORNE MINSTER

The remarkable chained books in Wootton Wawen church, Warwickshire (bottom), here shown open, were given by the Rev. George Duns-comb, vicar from 1642 to 1652. A Prayer Book, dated 1633, in the collection was apparently used after the suppression of the Episcopate, as the word "Bishop," wherever it occurs, has been struck out. The chained library at Wimborne Minster (top) is reached by stairs, through the vestry. It was founded in the seventeenth century, and may be regarded as an early instance of a free public library.
