The Cliff-Base Light at Beachy Head

The Cliff-Base Light at Beachy Head

The photograph shows Beachy Head lighthouse at the base of the giant cliff, but its predecessor occupied a much more exalted position on the Head itself. It was found, however, that at this height the light was not visible to the ships that passed close in. Great difficulty was experienced in constructing the present lighthouse on its sea bed, owing to the depth of water at high tide. All the material had to be lowered from the cliff by a cable. The lantern is only 23 feet above sea level.
