ROMANCE AND HISTORY PRESERVED FOR EVER IN THE WALLS OF HADDON HALL

ROMANCE AND HISTORY PRESERVED FOR EVER IN THE WALLS OF HADDON HALL

In Derbyshire, on the left bank of the Wye, about two miles south-east of Bakewell, lies Haddon Hall, the finest of the old medieval houses left in England Towards the close of the sixteenth century the celebrated Dorothy Vernon married Sir John Manners. These steps (bottom) are the ones pointed out in connexion with the entirely fictitious elopement of Dorothy, who, in reality, made a splendid match with her parents' entire approval. In fact the steps themselves were built after her marriage. Above we see the banqueting hall, with its 17th century gallery.
