HOME OF A JACOBITE NOBLEMAN AND ANNIE LAURIE'S BIRTHPLACE

HOME OF A JACOBITE NOBLEMAN AND ANNIE LAURIE'S BIRTHPLACE

Dilston Castle (bottom), in Northumberland, belonged to the ill-fated Earl of Derwentwater, beheaded on Tower Hill for his part in the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. In the upper photograph we see Maxwelton House, near Momaive, Dumfriesshire, where Annie Laurie (1682-1764) was born. The first two original verses of the song were written by a rejected suiter.
