King Alfred and the British Navy

King Alfred and the British Navy

The above photograph of part of the decoration of St. Stephen's Hall, Westminster, by Mr. Colin Gill, reminds one that in no matter did Alfred prove himself a great Englishman more than in his creation of the first English Navy. Ships, indeed, had previously been employed in the defence of the realm against the Viking sea warriors; but they were hired vessels manned by hired crews. It was Alfred who first conceived the idea of English maritime power, which has fructified in our nation's most glorious heritage.
