LEWIS: "STANDING STONES" OF CALLERNISH, STORNOWAY

LEWIS:

Crowning a hill above the small village of Callernish on Lewis are some famous stones of mysterious origin set in the form of a cross and with a circle round the point where the two arms meet. The largest stone is about fifteen feet high and in font of it is what appears to have been an altar. There are several similar and smaller groups in the vicinity.
