BASS ROCK AND ITS LIGHTHOUSE IN THE FIRTH OF FORTH

BASS ROCK AND ITS LIGHTHOUSE IN THE FIRTH OF FORTH

The great mass of basalt, 350 feet high, called the Bass Rock lies amid a number of smaller islets in the Firth of Forth off the coast of Haddingtonshire. The Bass Rock is a mile and a quarter from the shore and three miles north-west of North Berwick. It swarms with gannets, otherwise called solan geese. When the weather is fine enough a landing may be made on the Rock, on which is a ruined castle. This was the last fortress held for James II of England, and it was destroyed after its capitulation in 1694.
