THE GREAT MILESTONE OF BARKWAY AND THE BULL, HODDESDON

THE GREAT MILESTONE OF BARKWAY AND THE BULL, HODDESDON

After leaving Broxbourne we pass the old market town of Hoddesdon (top), where was the Thatched House to which Izaak Walton used to come. It has long ago vanished. On we go through Ware to Puckeridge, where the road divides, one branch getting to Cambridge via Royston and the other through Barkway (bottom). Here there is a remarkable milestone bearing the arms of Trinity Hall Cambridge. It was one of a series erected, 1725-32, from funds left by two members of the college in 1586.
