Shaftesbury Terrace; and Wedmore Church Somerset

Shaftesbury Terrace; and Wedmore Church Somerset

In the year 880 there was founded by King Alfred at Shaftesbury an Abbey for Benedictine nuns which subsequently became famous for its wealth and splendour. Not a trace of the abbey remains, but it is known (through excavations) to have stood behind the trees on the terrace (bottom), overlooking the little town, which was known in the olden days as Palladour. The style of Wedmore Church (top) is Perpendicular. Wedmore is famous as the place where Alfred signed the treaty of peace with Guthrum in 878.
