FIREPLACE OF ONE OF THE RUINED ROOMS OF BODIAM

FIREPLACE OF ONE OF THE RUINED ROOMS OF BODIAM

The castle lies in the Rother valley a few miles east of Robertsbridge, while Bodiam village, on the same or north side of the river is a little above the marsh level. Inside the castle there are the ruins of hall, chapel and kitchen to be seen. The good knight who built Bodiam had seen service in the Hundred Years' War, and was no doubt influenced in his building by the French work he had encountered. At any rate, the castle has a striking resemblance to the one at Villandraut, near Bazas, in South France.
