MOATED CASTLE OF BROUGHTON IN OXFORDSHIRE

MOATED CASTLE OF BROUGHTON IN OXFORDSHIRE

Two and a half miles south of Banbury is the village of Broughton, and near it is a fine castle, the seat of Lord Saye and Sele. The structure was built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. Originally belonging to the De Broughton family, it was sold to William of Wykeam and passed by marriage to the Fiennes, who acquired the title of Saye and Sele. The second member of the family to bear it was the first to hold the castle, and he was slain at the Battle of Barnet in 1471. The family still has the castle, which contains some fine pictures.
