Statue of King Alfred at his Capital and Home

Statue of King Alfred at his Capital and Home

The simple but impressive statue of King Alfred shown in this photograph was designed by the late Sir Hamo Thornycroft in 1901 to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the King's death and his long and constant association with his Wessex capital. His residence was Wolvesey Palace of which traces still remain on the north side of College Street. Ancient British settlement and Roman town, capital of Wessex and joint-capital of all England, Winchester yields to none in the interest of its history.
