COMPTON, A FORTIFIED MANOR HOUSE NEAR TORQUAY

COMPTON, A FORTIFIED MANOR HOUSE NEAR TORQUAY

This, until the mid-nineteenth century, was the home of the Devonshire Gilberts, and built in the early fifteenth century. The amount of machicolation is extraordinary. Every door and window is equipped with these pierced corbels, so that an enemy attacking any vital spots could be shot at with very little risk to the defenders. Part of the castle is now a farmhouse.
