Alfriston, in the Cuckmere valley, an ancient Saxon centre

Following the valley of the Cuckmere from the sea one comes to Alfriston, now a Sussex village, once a fairly important centre of the Saxon kingdom Although doubt has been cast on the theory that Alfriston signifies "Alfred's town," there need be no hesitation in believing that it was included in that bit of Sussex country with which he is known to have had the most intimate associations. Recently there was discovered a large Anglo-Saxon cemetery here, many relics of which are preserved at Lewes.
