LANERCOST PRIORY OF THE AUSTIN CANONS: LOOKING ACROSS THE CHOIR

LANERCOST PRIORY OF THE AUSTIN CANONS: LOOKING ACROSS THE CHOIR

Robert de Vaux founded Lanercost Priory, near Brampton in Cumberland, for the Austin canons about 1170, and looking through the ruined arches of the choir one glimpses a spacious and stately building with Early English and Perpendicular traits. The choir contains the tombs of the Dacre and Howard families. Westward, the nave has been restored, including a fine west front, and is to-day used as the parish church: its modern windows are by Burne-Jones. The ancient gateway to the monastery is still standing.
