North Gate at Borcovicus: The wall at Housestand

North Gate at Borcovicus: The wall at Housestand

Out of the 23 military stations that once guarded the Wall, Borcovicus is generally considered the most perfectly preserved relic. The photograph (bottom) is of the north gate of the camp, which was connected by a straight road with the south gate; occasionally, as at Cilurnum, a camp was furnished with east and west gates as well. A cunning choice of country is suggested by the view of the Wall at Housesteads (top) looking west, where the bold escarpments seem to spell impregnability.
