DE LACY'S KEEP AT PONTEFRACT CASTLE, AND THE HOME OF THE EARLS OF HAREWOOD

DE LACY'S KEEP AT PONTEFRACT CASTLE, AND THE HOME OF THE EARLS OF HAREWOOD

The Norman town of Pontefrete (Pontefract) was known to the Saxons as Kirby, but when after the Conquest William made it over to de Lacy, the latter changed its name. The keep of the castle De Lacy built (bottom) still stands, an ivy-encrusted monument. Subsequently Pontefract Castle passed to the House of Lancaster, and played its part in the Wars of the Roses. Harewood House (top) dates from the mid-eighteenth century and is known as the ancestral house of the Lascelles family.
