CHELSEA OLD CHURCH: THE OLD TESTAMENT IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY STAINED GLASS

Flemish glass painters were responsible for the early seventeenth-century windows in Chelsea Old Church, following the reconstruction of the building in 1600. Before that year there was an earlier church dating from the fourteenth century, and as recently as 1922 the demolition of a bricked-up window revealed a good specimen of early fourteenth-century glass. The Flemish designs seen in the four photographs above illustrate episodes from Old Testament history with the naturalism characteristic of the art of this period.
