THE STATUE OF RICHARD THE LION-HEART IN OLD PALACE YARD

THE STATUE OF RICHARD THE LION-HEART IN OLD PALACE YARD

In Old Palace Yard, Westminster, nearly opposite the Peers' entrance to the Houses of Parliament, Marochetti's fine bronze equestrian statue of Richard Coeur de Lion ranks high among the monuments to the Age of Chivalry. Richard I, negligible as an English king, was great as a warrior, and any shortcomings of his statecraft are offset by the legendary glamour of his valour and sufferings in lands beyond the seas. In its rugged vigour this is among the best of Marochetti's public statues.
