NELSON OF TRAFALGAR: THE BEST KNOWN MONUMENT IN LONDON

NELSON OF TRAFALGAR: THE BEST KNOWN MONUMENT IN LONDON

Not merely the monument, but what Sir Robert Peel described as "the finest site in Europe" commemorates the greatest of British admirals. The granite Corinthian column on which the statue stands is nearly 150 feet high, and at this altitude the 18 ft. high statue of Nelson assumes the proportions of an ordinary man, even of a small man, as he is known to have been. Landseer's lions at the four angles of the base and the bronze bas-reliefs representing scenes from the Admiral's famous fights, complete this assertive but dignified memorial.
