Military road at Bar Hill Camp, near Glasgow

This photograph shows a section of the military roadway excavated from the moor at Bar Hill, itself one of the most complete relics of the Antonine line. One may observe the straightness of the section as a typical feature of Roman road building; the invariable procedure was to lay these tracks in as straight a line as possible from point to point. As with the Hadrian line, the road extended the whole length of the Antonine rampart, close behind it, and was the main means of vehicular communication between the forts.
