THE SIGNING OF THE COVENANT AT GREYFRIARS

THE SIGNING OF THE COVENANT AT GREYFRIARS

Gieyfriars churchyard, Edinburgh, shown in this etching by Lockhart, figures in history as the place where the National Covenant was signed on February 28, 1638. There is a popular tradition that a flat stone in the churchyard was used for the signatures, many of which were written in the blood of the witness, at the dead of night.
