WHITWORTH PARK AND INSTITUTE, AND OXFORD STREET IN MANCHESTER'S THEATRELAND

WHITWORTH PARK AND INSTITUTE, AND OXFORD STREET IN MANCHESTER'S THEATRELAND

Beautifully laid out, the flower gardens of Whitworth Park (top) enshrine the Whitworth Institute, seen at the back of the photograph. The institute was founded in 1887 under the will of Sir Joseph Whitworth, the notable British engineer who died in that year. Its art collection includes a fine collection; of British water colours over the last hundred years. Oxford Road in which institute and park are situated, is a continuation south-eastwards of Oxford Street (bottom), one of Manchester's principal theatre thoroughfares.
