Entrance to Citadel, Plymouth: Lynns one remaining Gate

There is a distinctly Gallic touch in the imposing entrance to the Royal Citadel at Plymouth, and in point of fact the inspiration that dictated its architecture and decoration was Vauban's. King Charles built both citadel and gateway—exactly why is not certain, unless it was as a warning to West Country Parliamentarians who had not yet come to heel.
