THE ISLAND STRONGHOLD OF THE WOLF OF BADENOCH IN LOCH AN EILAN

THE ISLAND STRONGHOLD OF THE WOLF OF BADENOCH IN LOCH AN EILAN

Set in the far-reaching forest of Rothlemurchus, Loch an Eilan contains an islet known to naturalists as having been the last nesting place of the osprey. The ruined castle on it, however, holds a more sinister memory - that of the Wolf of Badenoch, whose stronghold it was. This ferocious son of Robert II of Scotland, in revenge for the sentence of excommunication passed upon him, warred relentlessly against the priests and buildings of religion. His most notable exploit was the sacking and burning of Elgin Cathedral in 1398. In the vestibule of the aisleless choir of Dunkeld Cathedral is a recumbent effigy believed to represent this violent Earl of Buchan
