Walmgate, York, and Old Gate at Holdenby House

Walmgate, York, and Old Gate at Holdenby House

Bootham Bar and Micklegate are the stateliest of the medieval entrances happily still preserved to the city of York; but Walmgate has a special interest for students of military architecture on account of its projecting barbican. Like the other "gate's" of York Walmgate was mainly built and rebuilt between the Conquest and the 16th century.
