PETER THE GREAT AS SHIPBUILDER AT WORK IN DEPTFORD DOCKYARD

PETER THE GREAT AS SHIPBUILDER AT WORK IN DEPTFORD DOCKYARD

Peter the Great, who came to England in 1698, left his mark on London in more ways than one. After a more or less formal visit, during which he stayed at a house in Buckingham Street, Strand, and amused himself by daily visits to the City (see text), he went to study shipbuilding in the Royal Dockyard at Deptford. The painting by Daniel Maclise (in Royal Holloway College) reproduced in the photograph shows him as he was discovered at work during a visit of grave King William III.
