Priors Gate, Rochester, and the Gateway to Bristols Close

Priors Gate, Rochester, and the Gateway to Bristols Close

Prior's Gate (left) standing on the south side of Rochester Cathedral, is easily the most noteworthy of the lesser entrances to its precincts. On passing through it one comes to the buildings of the Grammar School founded by Henry VIII, now a mixture of old and modern architecture. The entrance to the Close of Bristol Cathedral is a kind of index to the very beautiful Early Decorated workmanship that is the feature of the cathedral's interior-more particularly its choir. The superstructure of this gateway follows the same style in the enshrined figures on either side of the deep oriel window over the crown of the arch. The unity of the whole facade, including the side arch, is perfect-a wonder of carefully thought out design.
