S. Anns Gate to the Close, Salisbury Cathedral

S. Anns Gate to the Close, Salisbury Cathedral

Admittedly the best approach to the Cathedral is by way of S. Ann's Gate in the east wall of the inimitable Close. Not only does the North Walk on to which one emerges give one a complete view of the mighty church, but as the photograph shows, the approach to the gate itself reveals a veritable bit of Old Sarum. Henry Fielding is said to have lived in S. Ann's Street close by; probably with his grandfather who was a canon of the cathedral. A house just south of the Close is also associated with Fielding, and one in Milford Hill.
