Gateway to the Vanished Abbey of S. John Baptist, Colchester

Gateway to the Vanished Abbey of S. John Baptist, Colchester

A work of the Perpendicular style in flint and stone, the gateway of this Abbey of S. John Baptist is the sole relic of the once imposing foundation of Eudo Dupiter (a.d. 1096). The gateway itself was built about 1415. Little more than a century passed before the Abbey it was meant to adorn was dissolved and despoiled by the myrmidons of Henry VIII; it was in 1539 that Thomas Beche, the last abbot of S John Baptist, was hanged and mutilated at Colchester on a charge of treason.
