S. Clement Danes, where Dr. Johnson Worshipped

S. Clement Danes, the church that looks down Fleet Street and up the Strand, is one of the most fortunate of Wren's London churches in its island site. It was here that Dr. Johnson found communion with his Maker, though this was not in virtue of the dull services and duller sermons of the 18th-century divines who controlled the church's destinies; but rather on account of the high beauty of proportion and line in the church itself. The particular pew that he occupied in the north gallery is no longer there, but a tablet marks the spot.
