LOCH LOMOND FROM BEN LOMOND, A MECCA OF VISITORS IN THE COUNTRY OF THE MACGREGORS AND COLQUHOUNS

Loch Lomond is the largest lake, if not the most beautiful, in Britain. This photograph, taken from a shoulder of great Ben Lomond, reveals a considerable proportion of the thirty islets which, as Smollett wrote of them, "seem to float on its surface, affording the most enchanting objects of repose to the excursive views." The loch is of geographical significance in 'that it divides Stirlingshire on the east from Dumbartonshire on the west; and historically it belongs, like neighbouring Loch Ard, to the country of Rob Roy. The Clan Macgregor plumped for the Old Pretender in 1715; and one of the picturesque incidents of that early rising was their seizure of every boat in Loch Lomond. They were, however, speedily recaptured.
