A ROYAL DANDY AND HIS SHOE BUCKLE

A ROYAL DANDY AND HIS SHOE BUCKLE

George IV, when Prince of Wales, earned a sort of distinction by inventing a shoe buckle of unusual size and shape. His taste generally, like that of many another follower of Brummell, was of the florid variety, and often excited the derision of his mentor, whose creed at least was simplicity. The mezzotint reproduced is by J. R. Smith after Gainsborough's portrait.
