HERMITAGE CASTLE, A BORDER STRONGHOLD THAT IS HAUNTED BY THE GHOST OF WICKED WILLIAM LORD SOULIS

HERMITAGE CASTLE, A BORDER STRONGHOLD THAT IS HAUNTED BY THE GHOST OF WICKED WILLIAM LORD SOULIS

Between river and desolate moor in the Liddesdale district of Roxburgh, the ruined Hermitage Castle stands four square to the winds. This border stronghold belonged to the Comyns and Douglases in medieval times, but its most sinister owner was William Lord Soulis, who added Black Magic to his list of diabolical attainments. For some years he terrorised the neighbourhood, until at last his people rose against him and put him to a terrible death at Nine Stane Rig. Many a tale has been told of how his unquiet spirit, together with those of his abandoned boon companions, returned to the castle again and again to re-enact their wicked revelries. The castle was built in the thirteenth century and is situated about three miles north-west of Steele Road.
