THE GHOSTS OF KIMBOLTON CASTLE: TRAGIC CATHERINE OF ARAGON AND JUDGE SIR JOHN POPHAM

THE GHOSTS OF KIMBOLTON CASTLE: TRAGIC CATHERINE OF ARAGON AND JUDGE SIR JOHN POPHAM

Kimbolton Castle, Huntingdonshire, as seen in this photograph, is as it was rebuilt in the early eighteenth century by Sir John Vanbrugh. The Tudor mansion that preceded it was the prison-residence of poor Catherine of Aragon after her fall from King Henry's favour. Here died this most pathetic queen, and her ghost is said to haunt the galleries and dark spaces of the mansion. Another ghostly inhabitant of the castle is Sir John Popham, who is still said to " lie in wait for rogues and poachers under the great elms."
