OLD NEWGATE PRISON, ON THE SITE OF THE NEW OLD BAILEY: A PLACE OF BARBAROUS PUNISHMENTS

OLD NEWGATE PRISON, ON THE SITE OF THE NEW OLD BAILEY: A PLACE OF BARBAROUS PUNISHMENTS

This photograph of old Newgate Prison taken in 1903 recalls the most terrible of all British prisons. Here, up to the end of the seventeenth century, offenders who refused to plead were subjected to the drawn-out tortures of the press yard; outside the actual gates stood the stocks and whipping posts, and the carts to which minor misdemeanants were attached, regardless of age or sex, to be dragged half naked through the London streets, and here, after 1783, most of the public executions were held.
