WALLS FIELD, BALDOCK, WHERE RECENT EXCAVATION HAS REVEALED A ROMAN CEMETERY

Walls Field. Baldock, forty acres in extent, has been under cultivation since Saxon times. The bottom photograph shows the north-west aspect of the field, with Baldock church among the trees, and on the extreme left of the cabbage-planted area is the site of a Roman rubbish pit. The cemetery site (top) is shown looking south-west towards the small-holding "Homeland." More than three hundred burial groups have been excavated here at an average depth of 2½ feet. The exact sites are indicated by crosses in the photographs.
