A GENEROUSLY PROVIDED ROMAN BURIAL GROUP: EIGHT PIECES OF SAMIAN AND OTHER WARE

A GENEROUSLY PROVIDED ROMAN BURIAL GROUP: EIGHT PIECES OF SAMIAN AND OTHER WARE

Eighteen hundred years ago Roman settlers placed in the Walls Field the utensils of the eight-piece group shown in this photograph. Marvellously have they stood the test of time, the pressure of soil, and disturbance of one kind or another. All are in perfect preservation save the cinerary urn itself. In the front of the group (now in Letchworth Museum) are an excellent Samian ware cup and plate, with a square-sided glass decanter, with reeded handle, on the right, and at the back a striking white ware flask with a long neck and handle.
