BLUEBELL TIME IN THE FOREST OF DEAN AND THE STRAIGHT ROAD TO THE SPEECH HOUSE

BLUEBELL TIME IN THE FOREST OF DEAN AND THE STRAIGHT ROAD TO THE SPEECH HOUSE

The Speech House (now an hotel) is the recognized centre of the Forest of Dean, and the bluebell glade shown in the bottom photograph is in its immediate vicinity. So also is the long, straight strip of road represented in the upper photograph. It is many centuries since this area of hill and lovely woodland between Severn and Wye became identified with the production of iron, and even coal was worked here as early as the thirteenth century. Yet the extension of this industry has failed to spoil the eternal beauty of the forest.
