SIR R. SENTLEGER AND HIS BUTTERFLY HEAD-DRESS DAME AT ULCOMBE, IN KENT

SIR R. SENTLEGER AND HIS BUTTERFLY HEAD-DRESS DAME AT ULCOMBE, IN KENT

The brass of Sir R. Sentleger and his wife at Ulcombe, Kent, is a fine brass of the Yorkist period (1470). Extra plate had then been added to the plates at the elbows and shoulders, and this brass also shows the tasses attached by buckles to the bottom of the laminated plates. The lady's costume also has changed with the times, the severe style of head covering having disappeared, and the characteristic "butterfly" head-dress - a good deal more picturesque - having taken its place.
