The heathen Saxons called this month "Wolf-monath," because the wolves were then most ravenous. It was also called "Aefter-Yula," or, after Christmas. In the engraving, four oxen are laboriously drawing the plough. At that time they did not use horses for field labour; and oxen are used, even at the present day, in some localities.
