They are cutting down trees for firewood. The Saxons called February "Sprout-kele." Kele meant "kele-wurt," and was most extensively used at this time for making broth. The well-known custom of making pancakes on Shrove-Tuesday is a remnant of an old superstition, and certainly one of the most pleasing that has come down to us.
