The Pillared front of Exter's ancient Hall of the Merchant Adventurers

The Pillared front of Exter's ancient Hall of the Merchant Adventurers

A very powerful corporation was that of the Merchant Adventurers of the city on the Exe, controlling the whole of its continental trade in the sixteenth century. Their hall was built in 1466, but its most conspicuous feature, the projecting front, was not added till 1593. The building is a rich example of the Tudor Renaissance. In the main hall is panelling of 1556, and many armorial bearings recall the various trade guilds, town mayors and other personages of the past. There was a guildhall here before the present one.
